One of the ways that the WIB is referred to is as part of the Workforce Development System. That “system” is made up of a number of entities, some who work collaboratively and some that work independently. I guess that the workforce system is like the solar system where the parts have their own identity but some are more interdependent than others.

One of the elements of the workforce development system that works very closely with the WIB is our Career Opportunities Center. Career Opportunities is a one-stop career center, so called because it offers comprehensive employment and training services for individuals and businesses.

Many of you may be aware that Career Opportunities offers employment related services to individuals. Some of you may be surprised to know that Career Opportunities also provides a wide range of services to businesses in our region.

For example, Career Opportunities offers a number of recruitment services to businesses. A business can become a member of Career Opportunities simply by filling out a membership form on-line. Once a member the business can post job openings on a web site.

The business can also receive assistance from a Business Services Representative who will meet with an employer to tailor available services to meet the particular employers needs. Services that are available include job-matching, pre-screening of candidates, customized hiring events, industry briefings where a business can join with other businesses in the same industry to present their company to an audience of job seekers.

Career Opportunities can also provide the chance for a business to participate in a job fair. In the past we have even held a virtual job fair where employers could match up with potential workers electronically. Employers can also engage in a variety of self-assisted services including job posting, accessing labor market information and they can also access information about Unemployment Insurance.

While I think that most people know that job seekers can get help at Career Opportunities, I want to take a moment to make you aware of the range of services available for individuals.

First is Interest Assessment, which helps individuals to identify their true vocational interests; Career Exploration introduces jobseekers to the many career paths open by evaluating your abilities, values and skills. Educational Exploration is a component that provides information to jobseekers about the educational opportunities that are available to them. These services are made available through the Massachusetts Career Information System, which is free for all Massachusetts residents.

In addition to the above services there is a wide variety of workshops on resume writing, preparing a dynamic cover letter, interviewing and networking skills available for job seekers.

I encourage employers and jobseekers to visit the site as their first stop when hiring or seeking training and employment.
